Helsinki, Finland — September 3rd 2009 — Finland-based NetHawk today announced it has selected Sun Microsystems’ MySQL Embedded Database Server software in order to meet its stringent requirements for application speed, scalability and 24x7 availability – at half the cost of other databases.
NetHawk is a leading provider of telecommunications network analyzers and simulators. With a mission to enhance the quality and user experience of converged 2G, 3G and LTE networks, NetHawk provides software-based network testing and monitoring tools and services for telecoms and VoIP equipment manufacturers and operators.
As NetHawk began to develop its new 24/7 multi-technology network monitoring system – NetHawk EYE, they evaluated a range of potential database solutions run on commodity hardware. By purchasing MySQL OEM licenses from Sun, NetHawk had the flexibility to embed and ship MySQL as part of NetHawk EYE network monitoring system at a 50% lower database cost. Moreover, NetHawk makes extensive use of the MySQL Enterprise Monitor and Query Analyzer during its development phase in order to reduce Database Administrator and developer effort in managing the database and optimizing queries.
"MySQL handles 20,000 write operations per second from the NetHawk EYE network monitoring system and generates up to 8 Tera-Bytes of data comprising 10-20 billion rows per month, all accessed by multiple client systems in the operator’s Operations & Maintenance Center," said Markus Weiland, Product Manager for NetHawk EYE. "MySQL’s efficient partitioning of tables and indexes has enabled our product to better manage and perform with these massive data sets."
NetHawk EYE’s databases provide a range of critical capabilities for both the efficient storage and retrieval of network data from the converged networks. To diagnose network issues in real-time, NetHawk needed EYE database to deliver the highest levels of availability and throughput, with the lowest response times. They also required the database to be massively scalable in order to handle ever-increasing network traffic and subscriber volumes – and to be flexible that it could be structured to store and retrieve data over varying periods of time for trend analysis by its operators.
"We're delighted that one of the leading manufacturers of testing tools for telecom networks is running on MySQL Embedded Server," said Matti Rantanen, MySQL Nordic Telecoms Sales Manager at Sun Microsystems. "By powering NetHawk’s flagship product with MySQL, the subscriber experience is improved through high reliability and performance which is key in the highly competitive communications industry."
MySQL is the most popular open source database software in the world. Many of the world's largest and fastest-growing organizations use MySQL to save time and money powering their high-volume Web sites, critical business systems, communications networks, and commercial software. At http://www.mysql.com, Sun provides corporate users with premium subscriptions and services, and actively supports the large MySQL open source developer community.
NetHawk, founded in 1991, is a leading provider of telecommunications network analyzers and simulators.
